What is GDPR?
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new privacy regulation across the European Union. GDPR is a regulation by which the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission intend to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union (EU).
The regulation was adopted on 27 April 2016 and it becomes enforceable from 25 May 2018.
Compliance with GDPR is required by any organization (including those outside the EU) that holds or processes data from EU residents and it replaces the Data Protection Directive (DPD) 95/46/EC to become the single, all-encompassing privacy protection regulation in the European Union.
Potential fines for non-compliance can range from 2-4% of a company’s annual global revenue or amount up to 20 mil EUR, whichever is higher.
